  • Koi were first bred for color mutations in China more than 1,000 years ago
  • Selective breeding of the Prussian carp led to the developement of the goldfish
  • Carp are known mostly as koi in Japan
  • By the 20th Century a number of color patterns were established
  • When the Niigata koi were exhibited, interest in koi exploded throughout Japan
